There are several villages in Bali which still maintain their traditional home designs. This aims to establish a harmonious relationship between humans and nature. One of the villages is Batuan village, this village is one of many historical villages in Bali which is known as its Batuan Temple.
Batuan temple is located at Batuan street, Batuan village, Sukawati. The distance is approximately 22 minutes driving away from Ubud or an hour if you driving from Kuta. The location is very strategic, located at the main highway of Batuan village, so tourists can easily visit it, especially the location is the main way of Denpasar - Ubud - Kintamani tourist route. The location is also close to the Sukawati art market.
Batuan Temple Bali has a long historical record which built at the beginning of Hindu cultural civilization into Bali. In this temple, there are also a number of ancient relics from prehistoric times, such as a number of statues that still exist today. This is the reason why Batuan Temple is an attractive place to visit for tourists who want to know more closely about the Balinese culture also with history. There is also a pavilion known as Wantilan in Bali that used for Gambuh dance performances on every full moon or at the beginning of the month, the Gambuh dance performance starts at 7:00 p.m. until 8:30 p.m.
The building of this temple stands majestically and beautifully, the walls of the building are made of red brick decorated with a flower. As usual for temple buildings, it consists of 3 areas known as Nista Mandala (Jaba Sisi), Madya Mandala (Jaba Tengah) and Utama Mandala (offal) for each area bordered by walls and temples. Entering the temple area you will pass through the Bentar Temple, here you can see a Kori Agung building with the gate which the Hindu believes as a place of entry and exit of the Gods. On the left and right side of the Kori Agung, there is a gate for people to worship or tourists visiting this temple. In the center area, you can see Bale Agung and Bale Kulkul, in the other section there is also a set of gamelan to accompany their Balinese ceremony at the Batuan temple.
Before you enter the temple, you have to use a sarong or Kamen in Balinese and also a scarf that provided as the Batuan Temple dress code, it will be worn on your waist. This is one of the requirements to enter the Hindu sacred area as usual. Another requirement for visitors is women who are period are not allowed to visit any sacred area in Bali, including Batuan temple.
