Ulun Danu Beratan Temple

Ulun Danu Beratan Temple, or which is often abbreviated as Pura Ulun Danu, is the largest temple in Bali after Besakih Temple. The name of this temple refers to its location which stands on the edge of Lake Beratan. The location of this temple is quite special because it is located in the Bedugul plateau, which is about 1,239 meters above sea level. These conditions make the temple environment quite cool, with air temperatures between 18-22 degrees Celsius.

Ulun Danu Beratan Temple is located in the Bedugul area, Candikuning Village, Baturiti District, Tabanan Regency, Bali Province, Indonesia. This temple is open for tourist visits between 08.00 until 18.00. However, if the temple area is misty, the location of the temple will be closed faster to avoid unwanted events.

Ulun Danu Beratan Temple is about 45 kilometers from the center of Tabanan City or about 55 kilometers from Denpasar City. To reach this temple, tourists can use public transportation, such as taxis, tourist buses, and travel agents to the Denpasar-Singaraja line. Entering the gate, we will see a Balinese temple building which is characterized by a terraced tower. Inside the temple complex, there are at least a number of tower buildings that have a terraced roof, namely a tower with a roof of 11 levels, 7 levels, and 3 levels. The existence of the multi-story tower illustrates the worship of three gods, namely Lord Vishnu (11 levels), Lord Brahma (7 levels), and Lord Shiva (3 levels). Interestingly, because it is located on the edge of the lake which is rather low, making the land around the temple often flooded when the lake water discharge was overflowing. This condition creates a very beautiful landscape, where the temple complex with its cluster of terraced towers seems to be in the middle of the lake. The situation when the water overflowed is the best moment to photograph Ulun Danu Beratan Temple.

Besides being a historical site that records the development of Hindu teachings during the Mengwi Kingdom, the Ulun Danu Beratan Temple complex also stores other artifacts dating from the megalithic era (around 500 BC). On the left side of the front yard of Ulun Danu Beratan Temple can be seen a sarcophagus and stone boards.

In addition to historical tours, tourists can also enjoy the beauty of Lake Beratan which has a depth of up to 23 meters. Tourists who feel dissatisfied just by looking at it can rent a traditional boat or motorboat to surround the lake. Or, if you want to try the challenges of various water sports, you can also rent parasailing games, banana boats, and jet ski. To just spend time, tourists can also fish on the edge of the lake, precisely under the thick bamboo to just spend time. If you want a forest atmosphere with tempting fruit plants, tourists can go to Eka Karya Botanical Garden which is located about 300 meters from Lake Beratan.

As a historical and religious tourism object, Ulun Danu Beratan Temple has been equipped with supporting facilities, such as parking lots, children's playgrounds and toilets. The playground provides various game facilities, such as swings, swivel chairs, and seesaw. Near the playground, there is a restaurant that serves a variety of cuisines. This restaurant will usually be full of visitors during lunch hours.
